Baton Modes - Open & Closed

Your support hand should be up and in a relaxed defensive position. The retention cap of the
baton should be pointing at the suspect and your elbow should be close to your body. Use
tactical commands – ‘Get back!’, ‘Get on the ground!’

Only if you are in fear for your life or fear of serious bodily harm should you use your baton.
NEVER follow or walk towards someone with your baton, always back away.

Walking towards someone with your baton is an offensive behaviour. A baton is to be used as a defensive
weapon
